From Gingy Fly to Entomology

Aah, for the love of mangos… a nice big yellow one filled with juice that drips down your chin when you bite into it! Well, you might not be the only one enjoying it. The worm inside it, some of which you may have eaten, is also living and thriving on its nutrients. This worm, or maggot, comes from the fruit fly, what Jamaicans call gingy fly. This is where Dr. Pauline O. Lawrence’s curiosity comes in, where her career in entomology began.

New York-Based, Jamaican Entrepreneur Makes Inc 5000 List of Fastest Growing Businesses in the USA

Starting a cleaning service is not an unusual choice for Jamaicans who have migrated to the US, but entrepreneur Ingrid Murray has broken through many glass ceilings and surpassed the scope of possibilities for minorities in the industry. In August, she landed on the coveted Inc 5000 list for her New York-based business, Prospect Cleaning Service - a multi-million dollar building and maintenance services company that serves New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Caribbean American Appointed Associate Director of External Affairs For NMAAHC

Washington, D.C. — On September 11, 2022, Denise Robinson Simms was appointed as Associate Director of External Affairs of the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC).  In this role, Simms will direct and coordinate all aspects of the Office of Public Affairs, Office of Public Programming, Office of Special Events, and the Office of Visitor and Guest Services. She will also serve as the Museum’s liaison to the Smithsonian’s Office of Government Relations. As a member of the Museum Director’s senior management team, Simms will work closely with senior staff in setting priorities and devising strategies for advancing the Museum’s objectives.
