MDC Hialeah Campus to Host Virtual Talk with Dr. Jane Elliot on Racism and Its Effects on Society

Miami, - Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Hialeah Campus’ Impact Committee will host Racism and Its Effects on Society, an online presentation by lifelong educator, author, and award-winning anti-racism activist  Dr. Jane Elliott on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m. Dr. Elliott will discuss race and politics, combating racism, and how race and racial inequality have shaped American history. She will also focus on unlearning racial biases and recognizing its impact on our communities. There will be a Q & A session following the presentation.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has extended the summer meals flexibility waiver, now allowing Broward County Public Schools to provide breakfast and lunch at no cost to all children 18 years and younger – regardless of meal eligibility status and even if they don’t attend a BCPS school.

Soft Launch Set for Nation’s First Caribbean-American Heritage Museum

Plantation, Florida :Board members, community partners and volunteers of the Florida-based nonprofit, Island SPACE are excited to welcome guests and patrons to explore the nation’s first Caribbean-American Museum, opening at the Westfield Broward Mall in January, 2021. Media, underwriters and invited guests will have the exclusive chance to explore the space and engage with the exhibits on Monday, November 16th, and the general public will be welcomed to preview the space starting Thursday, November 19th.

Oliver Gilbert edged Sybrina Fulton, 50 percent to 49 percent of the votes, in the race for Miami-Dade commissioner, District 1 last month. Caribbean Today incorrectly reported last month that Gilbert, a former mayor of Miami Gardens, was again running for that office. We apologize for the error.

Commission Approved Commissioner Bovo’s Resolution Accepting and Expending the $99 Million Federal Grant for South Dade Transitway Project

MIAMI-DADE – On September 3, 2020, the Miami-Dade County Commission approved Commissioner Esteban “Steve” Bovo’s resolution retroactively authorizing the County Mayor or County Mayor’s designee to apply for grant funds in the amount of $99,999,999 from the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) Program, and authorizing the County Mayor to receive and expend said grant funds for the South Corridor Bus Rapid Transit Project. The Board also approved the historic award of the design-build agreement for the South Dade Transitway Project.
