Two Veteran Humana Leaders Appointed to Top Medicare Positions in Florida

TAMPA and MIAMI – Humana Inc., the largest Medicare Advantage plan in Florida, announced last month that it had filled its top Medicare roles in Florida with two seasoned health care executives, both of whom have held top executive roles in the company.

Caraline Coats, a 14-year Humana veteran, has been tapped to lead Humana’s South Florida Medicare market. As South Florida Medicare President, Coats is responsible for the development and expansion of Humana’s Medicare business in the 11-county South Florida region, which includes Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties and the Treasure Coast.

Coats also currently serves as interim-CEO of The Humana Foundation and will continue to do so until that role is filled.

In her most recent corporate role as Vice President of Provider Alliance, Coats expanded Humana’s Alliance provider relationships to approximately 170 Alliance clinic locations. Prior to that, she served as Vice President of Humana’s Bold Goal and Population Health Strategy, leading the company’s initiative to improve the health of the communities it serves across the country.

Coats earned an undergraduate degree in biology and a master’s in health services administration from the University of Michigan. While a Michigan native, she and her family have resided in South Florida for the past 12 years.

In his new role, Ruiz is responsible for staff leadership and continued development and expansion of Humana’s Medicare business in the 56 Florida counties ranging from the Panhandle to Jacksonville, down to Daytona, over to Tampa and down the Gulf Coast to Naples.

Throughout his 13-year tenure at CarePlus, Ruiz served in multiple leadership positions. In his most recent role as CarePlus Market Vice President, his responsibilities included overseeing the health plan’s expansion across Florida and growing its provider network. He also worked with the CarePlus team and its providers to help CarePlus achieve a 5 star Medicare quality rating four consecutive years and five times overall.

Born and raised in Florida, Ruiz holds both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in business administration from Florida International University.
