Caribbean nationals, like other students in the United States, have been bombarded with mixed messages about returning to school during the time of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center (CDTC) is hosting its annual Back to School Drive, benefitting hundreds of special needs kids in its care. With a goal of collecting more than 800 filled backpacks by August 6, CDTC is calling on the community to donate to the cause and volunteer.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) announced the selection of the Morehouse School of Medicine as the awardee for a new $40 million initiative to fight COVID-19 in racial and ethnic minority, rural and socially vulnerable communities. The Morehouse School of Medicine will enter into a cooperative agreement with OMH to lead the initiative to coordinate a strategic network of national, state, territorial, tribal and local organizations to deliver COVID-19-related information to communities hardest hit by the pandemic.

Students at School for Advanced Studies in Homestead organized a student protest on March 14, 2018, following the deadly school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Jamaican American Kai-Zoe Flowers was named eighth grade class salutatorian last month at Our Savior Lutheran Church & School in Plantation, Florida. Flowers has chosen to attend Archbishop McCarthy High School located in Southwest Ranches, Florida. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Our Savior innovated with a drive-thru graduation ceremony.

PRINCETON – Princeton University, a prestigious Ivy League university in New Jersey, has named Caribbean Canadian Nicholas Johnson, son of a Bahamian father and Jamaican mother, the first black valedictorian in the school’s 274-year history.  

Miami, – Today, four Miami Dade College (MDC) students have been named recipients of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s prestigious Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, a highly competitive national scholarship that provides students with up to $40,000 a year to complete their upper division studies.
