Justic for George

Dear Friends of District 8,

Over the past two weeks, our country has been devastated and driven to action – not just by the senseless deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, but by all the deaths that came before for which there was no justice or accountability.

justicefgeoIn the aftermath of tragedy, a movement is emerging. People of good conscience are coming together, fueled by young people expressing their outrage; by law enforcement officers who love the communities they serve; by those who have experienced prejudice and police violence firsthand; by elected officials and faith leaders.

But change will not happen by words alone.

We need real reforms, greater accountability between the community and police – including fully funding an independent civilian panel for police oversight – and a shared commitment to tackling racial injustice. Our best tool to move forward is bringing together stakeholders for a sustained, hard conversation about systemic racism and police violence, so we can provide real solutions to break the cycle.

This week I was proud to convene a community conversation with leaders from the Miami-Dade Police Department, NAACP, ACLU, and many other organizations. But the work is just beginning. I say bring it on. And as always, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

I also welcome you to join a bike ride for justice that Representative Kionne McGhee is organizing in our community tomorrow, Saturday, June 6 from 8 am - 11 am.

Together, let's begin to change our community for the better.

Yours in hope,

Daniella
