KINGSTON, Jamaica – Water Minister Matthew Samuda has sought to assure the public that there is no current threat concerning the quality of water at the Dunn’s River attraction in the resort town of Ocho Rios in the northern parish of St. Ann.
On Monday, the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) called on the Government to publicly release all water quality data from Dunn’s River and surrounding areas.
The call was made after the Public Health Department revealed at the recent meeting of the St. Ann Municipal Corporation that Dunn’s River has failed to meet recreational water quality standards due to elevated total and fecal coliform levels.
Total and fecal coliforms are types of bacteria.
But according to Samuda, all bodies of water on Earth have levels of coliform.
He said there’s no current threat at Dunn’s River and closures would happen immediately if public health was at risk.
