Makaira Wallace and Njisane Phillip Claim Gold in Chile

SANTIAGO, Chile – Trinidad and Tobago’s cycling duo of Makaira Wallace and Njisane Phillip rode to gold on the opening day of the Copa Chile de Ciclismo de Pista #1 at the Velodromo de Peñalolén here on Wednesday.

In the men’s individual sprint final, Phillip defeated Colombia’s Cristian Ortega in straight rides, while Esteban Sanchez of Spain took bronze over Brazil’s Joaoa Vitor Da Silva.

Earlier, Phillip overcame Chile’s Nicolas Vergara after being the fastest qualifier in the opening round with a 0.772-second effort for the flying 200 metres. He followed that up with a quarter-final triumph over Argentina’s Tiago Rivera, before taking care of Sanchez in the first semi-final in straight rides.

T&T also copped silver courtesy of endurance rider Teniel Campbell, who finished second in the women’s omnium.

Chile’s Maite Ibarra accumulated 132 points to Campbell’s 127 while another Chilean rider, Scarlet Cortes, earned bronze with 122 points.

T&T’s Alexi Ramirez finished fifth on 106 points.
