Cricket Australia's Usman Khawaja Still on Course to Face West Indies After Second Concussion Test

BRISBANE, Australia – Left-handed opener Usman Khawaja successfully completed a second concussion test on Sunday, to remain on course for the second Test against West Indies bowling off at the Gabba here Thursday.

khanwusAustralian left-hander Usman Khawaja.The 37-year-old, a veteran of 70 Tests, took a fearsome blow to the head from West Indies debutant quick Shamar Joseph on last Friday’s final day of the opening Test in Adelaide, and was forced to retire hurt while spitting blood.

There were subsequent concerns Khawaja had suffered a fractured jaw or a concussion but subsequent scans at hospital revealed neither.

“Usman Khawaja continues to progress through protocols following a head impact in the first … Test match against the West Indies. He completed normal concussion assessments today,” a Cricket Australia spokesperson was quoted as saying.

“Khawaja will continue to be monitored for any delayed symptoms. He will be reviewed again tomorrow prior to returning to training ahead of the second … Test match in Brisbane.”

Joseph bowled with pace and accuracy in the Adelaide Test to finish with a five-wicket haul in the first innings. The 24-year-old is on his first ever international tour after only making his first class debut a year ago.

West Indies lost the opening Test by 10 wickets.
