Suriname Elects Santokhi President

The Caribbean community nation of Suriname has a new president.

Chandrikapersad Santokhi, 61, leader of the Progressive Reform Party (VHP), was elected on July 13, during the first sitting of Parliament since the May 25 general elections. He replaced former military strongman Desi Bouterse.   

Jamaica wants local, general polls same day

Jamaica is aiming to hold general and local government elections at once.The government of Prime Minister Andrew Holness last month made that intention known by tabling a motion in Parliament which would allow voters to cast ballots on the same day.

Jamaica’s next general elections are due Feb. 2021.  

Barrow reverses, stays Belize P.M.

Dean Barrow, prime minister of the Caribbean community nation of Belize, has reversed his decision to step down ahead of scheduled general elections in November.

Barrow, who had signaled his intention to quit active politics, told reporters he would serve out the remainder of his tenure.
