Today We Reflect and Renew Our Commitment to Our Country and Service

There is an important distinction I like to make about Memorial Day.

PAMMEMI know many like to refer to Memorial Day as a day of celebration, and in the past, this three-day weekend is often marked by major sales at small businesses, barbeques, and time spent with loved ones at vigils, parades, and memorials.

But I see Memorial Day as a day of observation, rather than celebration.

Today is a day I remember and reflect upon the sacrifices of those I served with and those who came before me who have given their all in service of country.

We remember both their sacrifice and the values for which they fought. They leave behind families who are missing a loved one today so that we have the opportunity to spend time with ours.

Our country and our freedoms are not givens. They are the product of the ultimate sacrifice paid by our nation’s best.

It is a day to unify in honoring valor and decency. Today I hope all of my fellow Americans, regardless of age, race or political persuasion, can come together for a moment as a reminder that the country we fight for is worth serving and saving together.

In service and in memoriam for all those we have lost along the way
