Senator Barry Griffin Advocates for Consumer Rights and Protection in The Bahamas

Nassau, Bahamas - In a passionate address to the Senate on November 8, Senator Barry Griffin emphasized the critical need for consumer protection in The Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Highlighting the proposed Consumer Protection Bill 2023, Senator Griffin emphasized the bill's stringent elements to safeguard the rights of all consumers in the country, irrespective of their political affiliation or voting status.

barrygrffSpeaking on behalf of the ruling government, Senator Griffin stated, "I am sure that every Bahamian welcomes this bill and with its passage will bring this piece of legislation into the 21st century, in line with other Caribbean Nations, ultimately strengthening the way we protect our consumers, and more broadly the way commerce is executed in this country."

Once signed into law, the Consumer Protection Bill 2023 will serve as a hallmark piece of legislation, clearly defining the obligations of service providers, outlining consumer rights, and addressing vital aspects such as product liability and unfair trade practices. In addition, it empowers the Consumer Commission with the necessary authority to promptly investigate complaints, restrict and recall goods, and put an end to misleading or deceptive conduct, as well as exclusion or restriction of liability by contract.

In his continued advocacy for a competition policy, Senator Griffin said “competition policy is central to a country’s prosperity, it drives lower prices, greater consumer choice and high levels of innovation and economic productivity.”

The bill also raises penalties for non-compliance, sending a stern message to businesses that deceptive trade practices and false advertising will not be tolerated. The government is taking decisive action to enforce consumer protection laws, ensuring accountability through the work of the Commission and legal action, where necessary.

Under the government's commitment to public education, Bahamian consumers will be fully educated and sensitized about their rights and responsibilities. Similar efforts will be extended to businesses, enhancing their understanding of the provisions set forth in the consumer protection legislation. “The government acknowledges that there are consumers who often find themselves at a loss when faced with unfair commerce. Therefore, they are dedicated to building and enhancing marketplace practices to protect consumers from substandard products, exorbitant prices, unsafe food items and medicines, and the inability to make well-informed decisions,” Griffin continued.
