GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Guyana and the United States Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) intended to enhance the existing Memorandum of Security Cooperation between the two countries.
President Irfaan Ali (left) and US Deputy Secretary of State, Christopher Landau, following talks in Georgetown on TuesdayA government statement said that the MoU strengthens and deepens the long-standing partnership, building on earlier cooperation in countering narcotics and wider security collaboration.
The agreement was signed by Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Hugh Todd, and the visiting United States Deputy Secretary of State, Christopher Landau.
A statement issued by the US Embassy here said Landau and President Irfaan Ali “discussed expanding bilateral economic cooperation and strengthening investment opportunities, with a focus on strategic sectors including energy and critical minerals.
“The United States and Guyana reaffirmed their intent to strengthen counternarcotics and border security cooperation, consistent with the March 2025 U.S.-Guyana Security Cooperation MOU.”
The statement said that building on this, the United States intends to provide two million US dollars for a new initiative developing air domain awareness and unmanned aerial system capabilities.
“Deputy Secretary Landau’s visit underscores the United States’ commitment to strengthening partnerships across our hemisphere and advancing shared priorities, including regional security, energy resilience, and economic prosperity,” the statement added.
