Azerbaijan to Assist Suriname in Developing Oil and Gas Sector

BAKU, Azerbaijan - Azerbaijan says it will offer scholarships to Suriname in the field pf oil and gas, the state-owned the Suriname Communication Service (SCS) has reported.

(Photo: Office of the President)It said that offer was made during bilateral talks held between President Chandrikapersad “Chan” Santokhi and President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan  and that interest was also shown for investments in agribusiness in Suriname.

SCS said that discussions will be arranged between the state-owned Staatsolie and the national oil company of Azerbaijan SOCAR to explore partnerships.

According to the SCS, Santokhi, who is in Azerbaijan for the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), met with President Aliyev on Sunday.

He was  by Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation Minister Albert Ramdin and and the Minister of Spatial Planning and Environment, Marciano Dasai.

Suriname and Azerbaijan established diplomatic relations 24 years ago and the cooperation covers various sectors and themes.

SCS said that  Santokhi indicated that the Dutch-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country is at an important crossroads regarding offshore developments.

“At the same time, Suriname remains committed to maintaining its status as one of the world’s most forested and carbon negative countries,” it added.

For his part, President Aliyev welcomed his counterpart to Azerbaijan and indicated that his country has 30 years of experience in oil production, 95 per cent of which is offshore. Sharing knowledge and expertise in the oil and gas industry, agriculture and education were some of the topics discussed.

”Both presidents agreed that this meeting could serve as a starting point for further intensifying the relationship and that the countries could soon sign two agreements to give direction to the cooperation,” SCS said, adding that Ramdin and his Azerbaijani colleague “will soon take further steps to give more shape to this agreement”.
