US Embassy Issues Security Alert For the Border Between the Dominican Republic and Haiti
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – The US Embassy here has warned all citizens to avoid traveling to the border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
The warning was issued following the closure of all crossing points at the border due to unrest in Haiti that shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic.
The US embassy noted that while some U.S. citizens have reportedly crossed into the Dominican Republic from Haiti, conditions at crossings remain volatile and subject to rapid changes.
The four official border crossings are Malpasse-Jimaní, Ouanaminthe-Dajabón, Anse-à-Pitres-Pedernales, and Belladère-Elias Piña.
The U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo clarified that it cannot assist citizens in crossing the land border and advises travelers to prepare for delays, additional restrictions, or alternative transportation methods.
The Embassy urges U.S. citizens to stay informed, follow local guidance, and register their travel plans in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for updates and emergency assistance.
Travelers are also encouraged to explore air or sea transport options to avoid disruptions at the closed land border.
