Washington, DC - Caribbean American Congresswoman, Stacey E. Plaskett, has been appointed Ranking Member on the Select Subcommittee on Weaponization of the federal government.

Plaskett, who represents the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) at-large Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, currently serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, the House Budget Committee and the House Committee on Agriculture.

“I am thankful for this opportunity to serve our country and protect the integrity and soundness of our democracy as the Ranking Member of the Select Subcommittee on Weaponization of the federal government,” said Plaskett.

“The Republican’s attempt to derail the federal government’s obligation to investigate and conduct due process on actions, organizations and individuals that threaten our republic and create an anti-democratic environment will be met with strong resistance by myself and my Democratic colleagues on the subcommittee.

“I am committed to doing the difficult but necessary work of the committee with the collaboration of a stellar group of Democratic members. We are grateful for the ex-officio support and guidance of Representative Jerry Nadler, who has steered the ship so well on the Judiciary Committee.”

Additionally, Plaskett said she was “pleased to share” that she has been selected to sit on the House Intelligence Committee, “which is a tremendous responsibility”.

The Intelligence Committee is charged with oversight of the United States intelligence community, as well as the military intelligence program.

“I am honored to be a member of the Democratic Caucus, which recognizes that ability and positive outcomes come through the American strength of our diversity. My appointment as the Ranking Member of the Select Subcommittee on Weaponization as well as my assignment to the House Intelligence Committee represent the first time a Member from a US territory will occupy these posts.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to leader Hakeem Jeffries for his confidence in me. As he has so eloquently stated, his appointments to the select committee, ‘reflect the tremendous experience, background and ability of the House Democratic Caucus, and authentically represent the gorgeous mosaic of the American people.’

“It is an honor to hold such a strategic position, and I am eager to start the integral work of the committees to which I have been assigned for the 118th Congress,” the Congresswoman added.

Plaskett is a member of the US Congressional Black Caucus, House Blockchain Caucus and the New Democrat Coalition, where she is a co-chair of the Infrastructure Taskforce and the at-large Leadership Member. She also co-chairs the Congressional Caribbean Caucus.

Plaskett was appointed by the then Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to be one of the nine impeachment managers to prosecute impeach former President Donald J. Trump for “incitement of insurrection”, alleging that he had incited the January 6 attack on the US capitol.

Congresswoman Plaskett has served as General Counsel for the Virgin Islands Economic Development Authority, charged with the economic development of the US territory, and has also worked in private practice as counsel and transactional attorney for numerous companies.
