ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – The media fraternity is mourning the loss of Ivor Grenville Theophilus Bird, the trailblazing founder of ZDK Liberty Radio and a pioneer in the Antigua and Barbuda’s media industry.
Bird, 80, the fourth son of the country’s first prime minister and National Hero, Vere Cornwall Bird Sr and brother of the late prime minister Lester Bird, died Tuesday at the age of 80. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
But he was a prominent figure in broadcasting and sports, who in 1970, established the country’s first commercial radio station.
He is also credited with transforming the media landscape, creating a platform for news, entertainment, and community engagement. In addition to his contributions to media, Bird excelled as an athlete.
Media observers here say that his death marks the end of an era for Antigua and Barbuda, with his work in media and sports continuing to inspire future generations.
