Guyana to Begin Registration of Electric Bikes This Week

The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), will on July 4,  commence the registration of electric motorcycles and persons are being given a three-month period to do so before the law is enforced.

bikeFGThe announcement was made in a notice issued by GRA which was published in the daily newspapers and circulated by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) last Wednesday.

Persons are required to present a completed motor vehicle registration application form, purchase receipt, or affidavit of lost purchase receipt along with valid identification (National ID card, passport, or current driver’s license) to register an electric motorcycle.

According to the notice, the existing electric motorcycles that do not have a chassis or frame number will be issued a unique identification number by the GRA.

“It is the responsibility of the owner to engrave this number onto the frame of the motorcycle before proceeding to the Guyana Police Force to apply for the certificate of fitness,” the notice stated.

Further, GRA along with the GPF will allow a three-month “voluntary” registration period after which the law will be enforced by both agencies.

A person is required to be a holder of a valid driver’s license to operate one of the electric motorcycles.

The GPF was given the power to begin enforcement of the regulations governing the electric cycles in May of this year following the passage of amendments to the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Bill.

Under the new regulations, users of electric cycles are obligated to follow the same rules as motorcyclists when using the roadways and are required to have the relevant documents, among them a valid registration.
