PARAMARIBO, Suriname - The Suriname government has given the green light to a local company in partnership with an Indian based entity to construct a private hospital on Commissaris Roblesweg in the capital.
President Chan Santokhi (File Photo)President Chandrikapersad “Chan” Santokhi said on the recommendation of Minister of Public Health, Amar Ramadhin, permission has been granted to NV Vasumed to set up and operate the private hospital.
The company has a partnership with Apollo Hospital Enterprises Limited, established in India and Ramadhin confirmed that following a long procedure the permit was granted by the president last week.
A feasibility study was conducted and that in view of the activities around oil the gas industries, it was felt there is a need for such a private hospital with international expertise.
The project is being financed by private investors and the government said that no appeal has been made for government subsidies.
But they said that various conditions have been set that the owners of the private hospital must meet, Ramadhin said, including the protection of local hospitals.
Ramadhin said the construction of the private hospital could also possibly counteract the brain drain.
Apollo Hospitals has branches in various countries and the hospital will be built in phases, with the establishment of basic departments such as a pharmacy, laboratory, radiology department and clinical observation departments having priority.
All persons who will work in the hospital must be registered with the Ministry of Public Health.
