Heart Month Events at Broward Health

One in three Floridians will die from heart disease, according to the Florida Department of Health. There are steps Floridians can take to reduce their risk of succumbing to heart disease. As part of Broward Health’s drive to provide high quality care for all, Broward Health hospitals are offering a variety of events, some at no cost, during the month of February to help raise awareness of heart disease.

One of Broward Health’s signature events for American Heart Month is its Spin-a-Thon on Feb. 9 at Ride Element in Fort Lauderdale. This fundraiser will benefit Broward Health’s Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program, and is a family friendly event featuring food trucks, a silent auction and kids’ zone. Community Blood Drive – Wednesday, February 19, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Donated blood remains an important and immediate life-saving resource. According to the American Red Cross, nearly five million people receive blood transfusions each year. Broward Health Medical Center will host a blood drive from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the 3rd-floor atrium.Cost: Free

Heart Health and Stroke Assessments – Thursday, February 20, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Broward Health Medical Center will provide screenings for stroke and heart health, blood pressure and cholesterol for patients, visitors and staff in the main lobby from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.Cost: Free

Inflatable Heart Display – Thursday, February 20, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

An interactive inflatable heart will allow visitors to step inside the human heart to learn about cardiovascular functions and see displays explaining some of the latest medical treatments for heart problems. The display will be in the main lobby from 9 a.m. to 2p.m.Cost: Free

Blood Pressure Screenings and Inflatable Heart Display – Wednesday, February 5, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Blood pressure screenings and stroke prevention information will be provided at no charge to patients, visitors and staff from 11 a.m. to 1p.m. in the main lobby. Visitors can also tour an interactive inflatable human heart to learn about cardiovascular functions and see displays explaining some of the latest medical treatments for heart problems.Cost: Free

Heart Health Screenings – Wednesday, February 12, 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

Heart health screenings, including glucose and cholesterol checks, will be offered from 6:30a.m. to 9:30a.m. in Classroom No. 6. Attendees are asked to fast for the screening. Cost: Free

Heart Healthy Lecture and Cooking Demonstration – Wednesday, February 19, 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Discover dishes that are good for your heart health and learn how to prepare these healthy and delicious recipes. Enjoy a cooking demonstration and sample featured dishes from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Seating is limited, and reservations are required. Preventing and Managing Heart Disease – Wednesday, February 26, 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Join the conversation and learn how to prevent and manage heart disease with a panel of heart experts, including Andre Landau, M.D., interventional cardiologist, and Paul Rondino, M.D., cardiologist. The event, aimed at raising awareness about heart disease for the community and staff, will take place from 9a.m. to 10 a.m. in Broward Health North’s Conference Center.Cost: Free

CPR Class – Thursday, February 6, 6p.m. to 9 p.m.

The Family & Friends CPR Course teaches the lifesaving skills of CPR, AED use and relief of choking in adults, children and infants. Skills are taught in a group environment using the American Heart Association format, which provides students with the most hands-on CPR practice time possible. The class is taught by American Heart Association instructors from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Drive Conference Room at Broward Health Coral Springs Medical Office Complex, 3100 Coral Hills, Coral Springs. This course is for those interested in learning how to save a life, not for people who need a course completion card to meet a requirement. Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Screenings – On Fridays: February 7, 14, 21 and 28, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

High cholesterol usually has no symptoms. A simple blood screening will shed light on your cholesterol levels and allow you to make informed decisions about your health with your physician. Screenings will be offered from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the multipurpose room inside the hospital. Blood pressure and cholesterol screenings are free. Fasting is required for an accurate assessment. Heart Health Lecture – Tuesday, February 18, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Join Lucia Blanchard, D.O., cardiologist, for an informative lecture. Learn how women experience heart attack symptoms, the importance of calling 911 immediately, and current medications and treatment options that must be initiated quickly. Learn about sleep apnea and how it can affect your heart during this Senior Supper Club lecture. Heart Health Assessment – Tuesday, February 18, 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Being able to make an informed decision about how to address heart disease can start with a screening for blood pressure. High blood pressure often is only detected when measured, and high blood pressure increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Patients and visitors can get a heart health assessment from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the cafeteria. Cost: Free

High Tea and Trivia – Tuesday, February 18, 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

As part of our monthly High Tea & Trivia Lecture Series, Cardiac Services Manager Phyllis Ahern and Mammen P. Zachariah, M.D., cardiologist, will provide a healthy heart lecture from3 p.m. to 4 p.m.Join us for some heart healthy tips and trivia games in the cafeteria.Cost: Free

Heart Failure Support Group – Tuesday, February 18, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Learn how to incorporate cardiac care into your daily routine and discuss ways to improve heart health from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the private dining room. Cost:Free

Cardiac Care Health Fair – Wednesday, February 26, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Learn from each department of the hospital how cardiac care affects all aspects of health. Meet with our health professionals from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the auditoriums. Heart health screenings, a heart lecture and nutritional education will be provided. Cost:Free

2nd Annual Broward Health Cardiac Symposium – Embassy Suites by Hilton Fort Lauderdale, 100 SE 17th Street, Fort Lauderdale 

2ndAnnual Broward Health Cardiac Symposium – Friday, February 28, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, February 29, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Two Broward Health cardiologists will present: Kenneth Herskowitz, M.D., will address Infective Endocarditis Diagnosis and Management; and Ahmed Osman, M.D., will discuss Physiological Pacing, Heart Resynchronization and Beyond. This event is geared for physicians and healthcare professionals and will feature speakers from around the world discussing a variety of topics such asmitral valve,clinical trials and the science behind keto-friendly and fasting diets.

 The two-day symposium costs $35 for nurses and allied health professionals and $75 for physicians, and will be at Embassy Suites by Hilton Fort Lauderdale.
