One in three Floridians will die from heart disease, according to the Florida Department of Health. There are steps Floridians can take to reduce their risk of succumbing to heart disease. As part of Broward Health’s drive to provide high quality care for all, Broward Health hospitals are offering a variety of events, some at no cost, during the month of February to help raise awareness of heart disease.
One of Broward Health’s signature events for American Heart Month is its Spin-a-Thon on Feb. 9 at Ride Element in Fort Lauderdale. This fundraiser will benefit Broward Health’s Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program, and is a family friendly event featuring food trucks, a silent auction and kids’ zone. Community Blood Drive – Wednesday, February 19, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Donated blood remains an important and immediate life-saving resource. According to the American Red Cross, nearly five million people receive blood transfusions each year. Broward Health Medical Center will host a blood drive from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the 3rd-floor atrium.Cost: Free
Heart Health and Stroke Assessments – Thursday, February 20, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Broward Health Medical Center will provide screenings for stroke and heart health, blood pressure and cholesterol for patients, visitors and staff in the main lobby from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.Cost: Free
Inflatable Heart Display – Thursday, February 20, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
An interactive inflatable heart will allow visitors to step inside the human heart to learn about cardiovascular functions and see displays explaining some of the latest medical treatments for heart problems. The display will be in the main lobby from 9 a.m. to 2p.m.Cost: Free

Blood pressure screenings and stroke prevention information will be provided at no charge to patients, visitors and staff from 11 a.m. to 1p.m. in the main lobby. Heart health screenings, including glucose and cholesterol checks, will be offered from 6:30a.m. to 9:30a.m. in Classroom No. 6. Attendees are asked to fast for the screening. Cost: Free
Heart Healthy Lecture and Cooking Demonstration – Wednesday, February 19, 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
Discover dishes that are good for your heart health and learn how to prepare these healthy and delicious recipes. Enjoy a cooking demonstration and sample featured dishes from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Seating is limited, and reservations are required. Preventing and Managing Heart Disease – Wednesday, February 26, 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The Family & Friends CPR Course teaches the lifesaving skills of CPR, AED use and relief of choking in adults, children and infants. Skills are taught in a group environment using the American Heart Association format, which provides students with the most hands-on CPR practice time possible. Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Screenings – On Fridays: February 7, 14, 21 and 28, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
High cholesterol usually has no symptoms. A simple blood screening will shed light on your cholesterol levels and allow you to make informed decisions about your health with your physician. Screenings will be offered from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the multipurpose room inside the hospital. Blood pressure and cholesterol screenings are free. Fasting is required for an accurate assessment. Two Broward Health cardiologists will present: Kenneth Herskowitz, M.D., will address Infective Endocarditis Diagnosis and Management; and Ahmed Osman, M.D., will discuss Physiological Pacing, Heart Resynchronization and Beyond. This event is geared for physicians and healthcare professionals and will feature speakers from around the world discussing a variety of topics such asmitral valve,clinical trials and the science behind keto-friendly and fasting diets.
