Miami, – On the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Miami Dade College (MDC) will honor the victims and heroes with ceremonies and events at various campuses. MDC President Madeline Pumariega and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Division Chief Danny Cardoso will attend the Resilience and Strength ceremony at 9 a.m., Friday, Sept. 10, at the North Campus, West Lawn Plaza. The event will remember nearly 3,000 men, women and children from more than 90 countries who perished on that day. Everyone is welcome to participate.
MDC North Campus is also home to two steel artifacts from the World Trade Center donated to MDC by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. These permanently installed fixtures serve as a tribute to all those who lost their lives in the terror attacks and also to America’s resilience. MDC North Campus is located at 11380 N.W. 27th Ave.

MDC Wolfson Campus will host the 4th annual 9/11 National Day of Service. Students at Wolfson have committed to honoring the lives of the 9/11 victims and their families by serving their community and giving back. To continue with the commitment to environmental sustainability, this year the MDC Campus partnered with the local non-profit, Clean Miami Beach, to serve on a day-long coastal cleanup.
The Honors College will also hold a virtual 9/11 20th Anniversary Remembrance. This is open to all Honors students and will include a moment of quiet reflection/remembrance, an acknowledgement of those lost on that day, a historical recollection, and other activities.

A panel discussion will be held with firefighters, emergency medical service members, and military heroes who recall the events and aftermath of Sept. 11.

A reflection board will honor the first responders who risked their lives and will feature two illuminating beams to represent the twin towers as is done in New York City. Students, faculty, and staff can visit an informational booth to share their thoughts and reflections about the events that occurred on this important yet tragic day in U.S. history.

Local community organizations will introduce students to multiple volunteer and service opportunities they can participate to honor the victims of 9/11 with a Day of Service. In addition to the service opportunities, Phi Theta Kappa and the Student Government Association will host a drive to collect toiletries and essentials to support Haiti relief efforts.

For National Day of Service in remembrance of 9/11, local community partners will provide service opportunities to students. Students can also write their thoughts of remembrance on a reflection board, explore some of the meaningful opportunities to volunteer on campus and in the community, learn about financial aid opportunities, and engage in a pop-up library. All first responders, healthcare, police, fire rescue, and military will receive 9/11 commemorative lapel pins in observance of the 20th anniversary.
