Newly Renovated Beach at Larry and Penny Thompson Memorial Park and Campground Enhances Community Resilience

MIAMI —There are plenty of spots to spread out a beach towel and relax or swim, while practicing social distancing and other Miami-Dade County New Normal guidelines, at the newly renovated beach at Larry and Penny Thompson Memorial Park and Campground, located at 12451 SW 184 Street, Miami.

The new development was completed by the-Miami-County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department, which operates the park. Updates include restoration of the lake’s beach area that includes new sand, native landscape, and a new park sign, as well as enhancements to the freshly painted beach concession building and restrooms.  

On Saturday, August 29, 2020 at 10 a.m., Miami-Dade County District 9 Commissioner Dennis C. Moss and Miami-Dade County Parks Director Maria I. Nardi will be joined by members of the community at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the beach improvements.

Commissioner Moss remarked, “Parks and open spaces provide access to physical and mental health benefits that are essential during this unprecedented time. I encourage residents of all ages to take advantage of the open-air amenities accessible at Larry and Penny Thompson Memorial Park and Campground, which will serve an oasis for outdoor recreation and relaxation in this community.” 

Parks Director Nardi stated, “Larry and Penny is the heart of this community and provides a safe respite from stress and confinement, while also providing a daily dose of relaxation and outdoor filled play. We encourage families to enjoy this beautiful lake beach park and landscape while maintaining social distance.”

All COVID-19 New Normal Guidelines will be observed at this park, including requiring all Miami-Dade County Parks staff and visitors to wear facial coverings and to maintain social distance between individuals and separation between groups.

Larry and Penny Thompson Memorial Park and Campground is first-class camping area. In addition to a large freshwater lake with its own beach, there are 270 acres of natural South Florida woodland, bridle trails and hiking paths.
