Commissioner Levine Cava Introduces Major Reform to Protect Biscayne Bay from Fertilizer Contamination

MIAMI-DADE – Today, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava’s legislation regarding fertilizer usage on first reading, a major step forward for Bay protection.

"My ordinance will ban fertilizer application in the summer months, prohibit the application of fertilizer with phosphorous, and limit the use of nitrogen – three factors that pollute our waterways, contribute to seagrass die-off, and cause environmental problems like algae blooms. The coming weeks and months are critical if we are to turn the tide on the crisis in the Bay. This administration has delayed for far too long, and I will continue to fight as I have for years for swift, science-based action to protect the Bay and with it our public health, environment, and economy."
