Barbados Joins ‘2050 Today – United For Zero Emissions' Initiative
GENEVA – Barbados has joined an international initiative adopting a climate action plan that is being undertaken under the guidance of ‘2050 Today – United for Zero Emissions’ initiative.
The island earlier this week joined the participating institutions, including permanent missions, international organisations, academia and civil society entities, pledging to reach their climate objectives, in accordance with the Paris Agreement and in line with Switzerland, the State and City of Geneva’s climate strategies.
‘2050 Today’ is the Geneva climate action forum where institutions of International Geneva partner to address climate change by measurably reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The participating institutions have pledged to implement over 1,000 actions, aiming for an average 32 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
Barbados’s Ambassador to the United Nations, the World Trade Organization(WTO) and other international organizations in Geneva, Matthew Wilson, told the launch of the initiative tha”we are an imperfect world.
“The fact that we are in the midst of climate crisis and no longer on the cusp of one tells us that. The fact that 2024 is the hottest year on record tells us that. The fact that we continue to breach our 1.5 degrees target, tells us this. But we need to act.
“In the Barbados Mission, we know that our contribution may be small, but we also understand the power of collective movements. All of us doing this together sends a message of collaboration and personal responsibility in addressing the climate crisis,” he sa
“We aim to reduce our emissions by 45 per cent from our 2022 levels and to continue to look closely at actions around food waste and mobility. Already we have been retrofitted with modern energy saving lighting solutions, working on solar power energy, and making more responsible transportation choices,” he added.
The plans from participating agencies in ‘2050 Today’ range from energy-efficient buildings to greener mobility, responsible food systems, biodiversity protection, sustainable information technology, and improved waste management.
