Singer Sophia Brown Has Worked to Get Relief and Care Packages to Residents of St. Elizabeth After Hurricane Melissa
In the five months since Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica, Sophia Brown worked tirelessly gathering relief items for the suffering in her native St. Elizabeth parish.
She finally touched down in the devastated area on March 3 and was overwhelmed by the scenes of beleaguered residents still picking up the pieces.
"Being abroad and seeing the damage to places like St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland and St.James, I knew I had to help rebuild Jamaica," said Brown. "I couldn't do it immediately but it was definitely on my bucket list."
Through her Angel Of The Hearts Foundation, she presented 85 care packages to people in Carisbrook, a farming district in St. Elizabeth which was affected by the Category 5 hurricane.
Although she was born in the capital Kingston, Brown was raised in Carisbrook. Her initiative was supported by donations from Food For The Poor, singer Johnny Osbourne and Barbara Ellison.
Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica on October 28th. It caused severe damage to St. Elizabeth, which is located in the southern section of the island.
Melissa had similar impact in neighbouring Westmoreland, as well as Hanover, St. James and Trelawny parishes in the west.
The most powerful system to hit Jamaica since Hurricane Gilbert in 1988, Melissa destroyed infrastructure, homes, schools and resulted in the deaths of 45 people.
Brown, who assists people living with Down syndrome annually through Angel Of The Hearts Foundation, is a singer who has released four albums.
