On November 8th, Kaka Highflames was part of a team that visited sections of southern and western Jamaica hit by Hurricane Melissa. The destruction he saw was frightening.

kakapKaka HighflamesThe singjay/dancer was moved to write and record Melissa, a song produced by 360 Global Entertainment. It recalls the widespread grief he saw in St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland and Hanover, three of the parishes severely damaged by the Category 5 hurricane.

“It hurt me deeply. A lot of times the rural people get forgotten, but they’re the backbone of the country. Seeing homes washed away, farms destroyed, and people not even sure where the next meal was coming from made me feel both angry and determined,” said Kaka Highflames. “I felt like, as an artist, I had to use my voice to lighten the mood.”

Kaka Highflames accompanied country-reggae artist Wesrok to the rural region. They donated care packages to people who lost their homes and essential appliances in the aforementioned areas.

Approximately 45 people lost their lives because of Hurricane Melissa which made landfall in Jamaica on October 28.

A dancer who came to prominence in Jamaica through TikTok, Kaka Highflames is from Waterhouse, the Kingston community known for producing acts like Black Uhuru, Junior Reid and Wayne “Sleng Teng” Smith.

He branched out into recording music two years ago and has since released a cache of singles such as Slingshot, Flamez Rock and Badman Rock.

“I started out doing little demos and voicing in any studio that would give me a chance, and over time it grew into something serious. I’ve put in the work, learned the craft, and I’m still growing with every song,” said Kaka Highflames.
