Jamaica Gospel Song Winner Releases Reggae Cover of International Hit “Excess Love”
Kingston, Jamaica: The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission's (JCDC) 2019 Jamaica Gospel Song winner, Joanna Walker has released a soulful Reggae cover of the international Gospel hit Excess Love.
Joanna Walker, 2019 Jamaica Gospel Song Winner has released her latest single a Reggae cover of Excess Love.The melodic reggae rendition of the popular song is Walker’s first official single and is produced by Heartcour Production and Action Entertainment.
Excess Love, which was originally released in 2018 by Nigerian Gospel Artiste Mercy Chinwo has gained momentous popularity amongst Christians and other faith-based people around the globe.
“Excess Love is the kind of song that is needed today. We need to be reminded that Jesus loves us, He will never leave us nor forsake us. The words of the original song have not changed, but a new melody gives a fresh new sound to every ear,” said Joanna Walker, 2019 Jamaica Gospel Song Winner.
She continued, “The song focuses primarily on the memorialized death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, which demonstrates his 'Excess Love'. During this pandemic, the song speaks to strength, love, kindness and the spirit of encouragement through dancing, while reaffirming the unconditional and undying love of the Lord for us all."
Walker also stated that in addition to the song’s ability to minister to the masses, she chose Excess Love because it also had deep, personal meaning to her: “When I look back on my life and where I am coming from I don’t deserve the smallest blessing. I could have died so many times, but because of His never failing love, He has kept me and blessed me,”Walker continued.
Though this is her first official single, Walker has steadily been making a name for herself on the local entertainment scene in the less than a year of her winning the 2019 Jamaica Gospel Song Competition. She has ministered vocally on the stages of numerous wide-reaching concerts, including Grand-Gala, Come Celebrate Jesus, Fireworks on the Waterfront and Genesis,to name a few.
But even before her Jamaica Gospel Song win, Walker was no stranger to exploring her talent through competitions. She has been singing and writing songs for years, and has been a JCDC gold medalist since her performance days at the Christiana High School in Manchester.
Walker also won the Sandals and Beaches Encore Competition for the Caribbean in 2010 and earned herself a top-five place in the Open Mic International UK Competition in 2015.
Since its inception in 1987,the Jamaica Gospel Song Competition has become an iconic presentation of indigenous gospel music in Jamaica. It attracts over 200 artistes, producers and writers of original gospel music each year. This competition is also seen as another avenue for the unearthing and growth of writers, and vocalists through training with the best within the industry.
