Bass Guitarist Hopeton Hibbert Has died

Bass guitarist Hopeton Hibbert, who played in several bands including his legendary father's Maytals, died on April 10, according to a relative.

basshibbBass guitarist Hopeton HibbertThe veteran musician,  who was in his early 60s, also toured with the Skool band, Damian and Julian Marley and Morgan Heritage. He died from complications of diabetes.

He is the second of Toots Hibbert's children to die. Melanie, who was also part of the singer's touring unit, died during the 1990s.

Their sisters Leba and Jenieve also toured and recorded with Toots who died in 2020 at age 77.

Veteran music industry insider Tommy Cowan remembers Hopeton Hibbert from his days in Skool which also included drummer Desi Jones and keyboardist Christopher McDonald.

"He was very vibrant, always energetic when he was up there," said Cowan.

Singer Twiggi, who toured with Toots for over 20 years, told the Observer that it was Hopeton who brought her into his father's band.

She remembers him as "a very confident guy, very talented." He also produced two of her songs including Needing You Know.
