M-DCPS Prepares for Possible Influx of Students After Political Instability in Cuba, Haiti

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) has historically received large numbers of foreign-born students during periods of unrest or when natural disasters impact areas in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Given the recent political instability within the Caribbean basin as the Cuban people raise their voices and march to protest a repressive regime, and the people of Haiti are left with a government in limbo after the assassination of their president, M-DCPS may experience an influx of students from these nations.

In anticipation of this occurrence, District personnel has begun reviewing relevant protocols in the context of current COVID-19 conditions and preparing to coordinate efforts to ensure our school system is ready to welcome these students and meet their needs.

Over the years, the District has developed a comprehensive plan in response to the arrival of foreign-born students during such a period. The plan delineates procedures related to school registration, appropriate instructional programs and materials, food services, and transportation to be followed at impacted schools, feeder patterns, and Region Centers.  Additionally, staff will begin discussions with appropriate local, state, and federal entities to advocate for additional resources necessary to assist the District in addressing a potential influx of students.

Carvalho. “This school district will continue its long-standing history of opening our arms to welcome, embrace, and educate all students.”
