CARICOM Chair Extends Congratulations to Canada’s Liberal Party Leader

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – The chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM)  grouping, Mia Mottley has congratulated Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney following his victory in federal elections on Monday, following a campaign overshadowed by relentless provocations and steep trade tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.

markllPrime Minister Mark Carney“We wish Prime Minister Mark Carney every success, and, in my capacity as Chair of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), I reaffirm our commitment not only to deepening the friendship between our two countries, but also to nurturing the bonds between Canada and the entire Caribbean region in the years ahead,” said Mottley, who is also the Prime Minister of Barbados.

The Liberals won 169 seats, three short of the 172 needed to govern without support from a smaller party. The Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre whose party enjoyed a lead of more than 20 points over the Liberals before Trump returned to the White House, lost his seat of Carleton which he had held for more than 20 years.

“Democracy remains one of the greatest acts of faith in humanity. It is the belief that free people can shape their destiny with wisdom, courage, and hope,”Mottley said.

“Today, on behalf of the Government and people of Barbados, I extend heartfelt congratulations to the people of Canada on the peaceful exercise of their democratic rights.

We commend all those who participated in strengthening the democratic tradition, which has long defined Canada’s place in the world.”

She said in a time of uncertainty and change, “Canada’s global example of upholding the rule of law, the dignity of the individual, and the pursuit of an inclusive society continues to stand as a beacon to nations everywhere”.
