The Basel South Black Art Show Serves as the Opening Event for New South Dade Black History Center

MIAMI, Florida – The South Dade Black History Center Advisory Board, one of the 11 boards under the Office of Community Advocacy, recently hosted the Basel South Black Art Show at the Larcenia J. Bullard Plaza in Miami. The 3-day event featured the work of local artists to provide the South Dade community with an art event during Art Basel Weekend. The opening night reception began with a moment of silence and candle lighting to honor the legacy of Congresswoman Carrie P. Meek, the first Black person to represent Florida in the House of Representatives, who served five terms; she will be remembered as a fighter for job creation, and programs for the betterment of the community.

Why Do Warm Season Lawns Turn Brown?

 Most homeowners located within the southern two-thirds of the United States may notice periods of time when their grass turns brown from dormancy. This can happen for a variety of reasons such as a change in temperatures or from drought dormancy. Warm season grasses and cool season grasses go dormant at different times of the year due to the change in temperatures. Warm season grasses flourish during the warmer times of the year and go dormant in the winter. Cool season grasses, however, flourish during the cooler periods of the year and go dormant in the summer. This article mainly focuses on winter dormancy for warm season grasses and what homeowners need to know about maintaining their lawns during this period.

M-DCPS Expands Pediatric COVID-19 Vaccination Program to Include Children Ages 5 and Older

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is expanding its voluntary COVID-19 vaccination  program to include all children ages 5-11. M-DCPS is partnering with Miami-Dade County, The Children’s Trust, Florida Department of Health (FDOH), University of Miami Health System (UHealth) Pediatric Mobile Clinic, Jessie Trice Community Health Center (JTCHC) and Community Health of South Florida (CHI) to offer the vaccine at dozens of schools throughout the District.

Caribbean Lottery Continues Annual Sponsorship of Outreach Activities

Philipsburg, St. Maarten – Caribbean Lottery continues to show benevolence by helping to shoulder the “cost to care” through annual sponsorship of outreach activities completed by the Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunrise and Broadcaster and Humanitarian, Valerie van Putten despite the financial difficulties during the pandemic.

Miami-Dade County Extends Living Wage to All MIA Employees

MIAMI, Florida - This week, the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners approved Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s proposal to extend concessionaire agreements at Miami International Airport (MIA) that ensure all workers at MIA earn a living wage. Employees of food and retail vendors at MIA will now earn $17.62 per hour, above Florida’s minimum wage of just $10 an hour.

DOH-Miami-Dade Offers Appointments for COVID-19 Vaccines, Vaccine Booster and Pediatric Vaccine

Miami, FL – The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County (DOH-Miami-Dade) is offering appointments for the Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen COVID-19 vaccine. The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is available to individuals 5 years of age and older while the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine is available to individuals 18 years of age and older.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ Project UP-START Supports Students Experiencing Unstable Housing

Nearly 2.5 million youth nationwide experience homelessness every year. Along with losing their homes, community, friends, routines, and their sense of stability and safety, many homeless youths are also victims of trauma. While trying to survive on the streets, they are exposed to countless dangers, with an increased likelihood of substance abuse, early parenthood, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, and a vulnerability to being trafficked.

The Baynanza Biscayne Bay Cleanup Returns for its 39th Year, on Saturday November 6

MIAMI, Florida — The Baynanza Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day is back this year with 11 locations for residents to volunteer in cleaning and restoring Biscayne Bay’s shoreline throughout Miami-Dade County, Saturday, November 6, from 9 a.m. to noon. County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava will be present at Deering Estate to help kick off the event and to make a special announcement.
