When Wayne Wonder performs at Miramar Cultural Center on May 30 on the ‘Step Into A Journey to Kingston’ show, there will likely be memories of the singer’s youth in the East Kingston community of Dunkirk.

Chambers at the launch of 'Step Into A Journey to Kingston', scheduled for May 30 at the Miramar Cultural Center. That area, dogged by decades of gang and political violence, nurtured his career, as well as that of Agent Sasco and Spragga Benz. The latter, who celebrates his 57th birthday on May 30, is the star attraction for ‘Step Into A Journey to Kingston’.

“East Kingston had a lotta competition in the 1980s, with sound systems. Wi used to deejay, wi used to sing, wi a freestyle. Me an’ Spragga, the community was behind us,” Wayne Wonder recalled. “Dunkirk, Water Street, Rockfort. Everywhere fully endorse wi.”

To be hosted by Miramar City Commissioner, Maxwell B. Chambers, ‘Step Into A Journey to Kingston’ also features Kevin Lyttle, Stephen, Damian, Ky-Mani and Yohan Marley; Everton Blender, Bugle, Pressure, Don Yute and The Red Square Crew.

They will salute Spragga Benz, best known for dancehall anthems like A1 Lover, Wi Nuh Like and Jack it Up. He also played Wayne in the 2002 movie, Shottas.

Like Spragga Benz, Wayne Wonder’s career took off during the 1990s with songs like Saddest Day, Joy Ride and Bonafide Love (Movie Star) which was done with Buju Banton.

His biggest hit, the gold-selling No Letting Go, was released in 2002. Lift me Up, Never Alone, W For The Win and Sweet, are Wayne Wonder’s latest songs.

Artists for ‘Step Into A Journey to Kingston’ will be backed by the Florida Memorial University Orchestra.
