New York City Mayor Eric Adams Cuts Asylum Seeker Spending By 10 Percent

NEW YORK, New York – New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced an additional 10 percent cut in the budgeted city-funded asylum seeker costs on top of the successful 20 percent asylum seeker cut in the Preliminary Budget, while continuing intensive case work for migrants to help them on their path to self-sufficiency.

According to Ghana’s Diaspora Affairs Office, approximately 1,500 African Americans settled in the West African country since 2019. That year marked “The Year of Return” initiated by Ghana’s President, Nana Akufo-Addo, inviting people of African descent from around the world to come home. These new arrivals added to the estimated 5,000 African Americans and 4,000 Jamaicans who settled in the country in recent decades. Jamaican-born Rique Kofi Ennis is one of them. This week's Caribbean Today interview is a Black History Month feature that seeks to find out why some Jamaicans are settling in Africa.
