Miami-Dade County and MSC Group,Shipment of Humanitarian Supplies for Residents of The Bahamas Affected by Hurricane Dorian

MIAMI — Miami-Dade County and MSC Group, one of the world’s leading container shipping and logistics conglomerates as well as the parent company of MSC Cruises, in collaboration with PortMiami and other maritime partners are assisting the people of The Bahamas with humanitarian aid, including a shipment of over 200 gas generators, tarps, cords, water, canopies and gas cans, among other items of necessity for the victims of Hurricane Dorian.

shippmetMSC Group, through its container shipping arm, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, has been present in the region for the past 20 years and has long been the leading cargo import and export operator in The Bahamas, with local headquarters based in Freeport, Grand Bahama. The operation will involve several MSC hubs in the U.S., the Caribbean and beyond, with its U.S. cargo shipping arm, MSC USA, loading and carrying the containers of relief aid to The Bahamas.

“Despite our global presence and large-scale operations, MSC is ultimately a family company and we are fully committed to supporting both immediate and longer-term relief and recovery efforts in The Bahamas,” said Fabio Santucci, Managing Director MSC USA. “In this initial phase, MSC’s extensive land and sea operations and services, along with our regional as well as local knowledge and our gracious partners have allowed us to quickly mobilize to collect and begin delivery of these items of necessity. In the meantime, together with our charitable arm, the MSC Foundation, we are continuing to work closely with local officials in The Bahamas, community leaders, and key relief and recovery organizations to identify additional ways in which our group can support the immediate and longer-term needs of the local population and businesses, as they look to rebuild in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian.”

The first shipment arrived at Freeport, Bahamas on September 10, 2019, in 16 MSC 40-foot and two 20-foot containers, and further shipments are being arranged, based on a careful research to select what the population needs most at this very difficult time.

“We know far too well the human suffering and devastation caused by hurricanes,” said, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez.  “We’re very grateful to our partners at MSC Group for their collaboration. This is a humanitarian disaster, and all the aid we provide to our neighbors, from search and rescue to the shipment of goods, will help to alleviate a lot of human suffering in the long road to recovery.”
