Haiti's PM Condemns Armed Attack on Milot Hospital

PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti – Prime Minister Ariel Henry has condemned the attack on the Milot hospital by armed individuals that has led to its closure , calling for an investigation into the matter and for those responsible to be prosecuted.

MHospitalA section of the hospital vandalized by the armed group on Monday.“Such barbaric and reprehensible acts are only intended to sow anarchy in our environment and to endanger lives and property,” Prime Minister Henry said regarding Monday’s attack.

“The public authorities have been instructed to launch an investigation to prosecute the criminals and bring them to justice, in accordance with the laws of the Republic,” he added.

Gunmen as well as others armed with machetes attacked the Sacré-Cœur de Milot hospital, one of the referral hospitals in the department of North, as they sought an unknown patient, who they said were being treated there.

But after hospital authorities refused to grant their request, the armed group went on a vandalizing spree destroying several vehicles, including ambulances and causing panic among patients and staff.

They smashed and destroyed windows and equipment, as well as setting fire and destroying the laboratory and hospital archives before leaving with the man they came looking for.

Executive Director of Sacré-Coeur Hospital,  Dr Harold Previl described the attack on Monday as “the height of human stupidity”.

In a statement, he said that it was decided to close the Sacré-Cœur hospital until further notice and called on the law enforcement authorities to investigate the incident and punish the perpetrators “of these barbaric acts”.

Meanwhile, the former president of the Senate, Carl Murat Cantave, is warning that “Haiti is dying…

“Haiti is dying. It is not a mono or two-headed government that will change the situation in this unspeakable disaster. The Haitian pact must be made around the disinterested reunification of Haitians, the restoration of security for all first (and), the rest will come,” Cantave said.
