City of Opa-Locka Mayor Matthew Pigatt & the City Commission Led a Massive Effort and Handed Out More Than 30,000 Face Masks in Opa-Locka

(OPA-LOCKA, Fl.) — The City of Opa-locka Mayor Matthew Pigatt and the City Commission have asked residents to join in on the fight against COVID-19. Mayor Pigatt and the City Commission hosted a #MaskUpOpalocka Mask Distribution last Saturday, July 18, 2020. They caravaned throughout the City of Opa-locka and distributed masks, hand sanitizer, and answered questions related to COVID-19.

Opa Locka2Despite the rain, Mayor Pigatt and the City Commission met at Sherbondy Park to begin the distribution of masks and hand sanitizer. The team went on to continue to meet with residents in the rain for more than four hours at local shopping centers, grocery stores, laundromats, restaurants, gas stations, and apartment complexes.

“We want to ensure our community masks up throughout the City of Opa-locka. We understand the importance of what’s going on and we want to make sure our community is protected,” said Mayor Pigatt. “If you mask up, you can protect others and stop the spread of this virus so we can get back to normal life. The City of Opa-locka wants to do our part as a Commission to raise awareness about what’s going on so we can fight this virus together. In addition to the #MaskUpOpalocka Mask Distribution, the City of Opa-locka has taken active roles in the community over the past four months, providing assistance during these unprecedented times. Weekly, the City of Opa-locka conducts a food distribution each Tuesday and has partnered with the State of Florida and Miami-Dade County to host a walk-up testing site to provide COVID-19 coronavirus testing to symptomatic and asymptomatic members of the public 12 years old and older. To date, 13,000 people have been tested. The Community Based Testing Site located at Sherbondy Park, is open daily, seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The CBTS has the ability to conduct 500 tests per day.
