Miami FC Edges Closer to a Playoff Spot

The Blues continued its winning ways with a comeback victory over the first-place Rochester Rhinos 2-1 at Marino Auto Stadium. Abe Thompson led the Blues with a goal and an assist in the first half to help the team pick up three crucial points.

Miami FC will continue its quest for the playoffs next Wednesday at Lockhart Stadium when they square off against A.C St Louis. Kickoff is set for 7.30PM EST.

“It was a great effort by our guys tonight. Our starters and our reserves were all focused and I am very proud of the total team effort,” said Head Coach Daryl Shore.

Ten minutes into the match, the Rhinos were able to grab a hold of the lead after a great cross on a Rochester corner kick, Anthony Hamilton backed up inside the box and headed the ball past a diving Matt Glaeser, putting the Rhinos up 1-0.

It took only a minute for the Blues to respond when Mike Randolph delivered a curving header into the box for Aaron Hohlbein, who was able to get a good header off but the Rochester goalie made a great save.

In the 17th minute, Miami put together some of its best soccer of the season as Danilo Martins started the play by passing the ball to Shriver at the top of the box. Shriver laid the ball off to Thompson, who made a great play by switching the point of attack down the left flank. Randolph launched a great cross towards the second post and Abe Thompson was there to get a head on it, directing it towards the middle of the box. Danilo Martins finished the ball scoring his third goal of the season and tying the game at 1-1.

The Blues continued to add pressure, knowing that this game was a must-win if the team was to keep its post-season hopes alive. Christian Gomez crossed a beautiful in-swinging pass to Thompson at the second post, who once again executed an accurate header only to be denied by the post. Danilo was in the right place for the rebound at the right time, but could not get a clean strike on the ball forcing as the shot sailed high of the crossbar.

The Blues continued to press, looking for the second goal and in the 24th minute Abe Thompson gave the Blues the lead after a Rochester miscue. Thompson took advantage of an errant pass that left him alone in the box, turned and beat the keeper to score his fifth goal of the season and his second goal in as many games.

Miami closed out the first half with more offensive opportunities. Gomez made a great move to free himself up on the end line and got a low cross inside the box, Danilio got a foot on it but the ball once again went over the cross bar.

Towards the end of the match Rochester had the final opportunity to level the game. Kissi trapped the ball off his chest with his back to the goal and made a great turn, leaving himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. But J.P Rodrigues made a great sliding tackle to knock the ball loose and preserve the 2-1 victory.
