NEW YORK, NY: Another NBA team has signed a Caribbean-born basketballer.

trinidad born detroit pistonsThe Detroit Pistons of the National Basketball Association recently signed Trinidad and Tobago-born Johnny Hamilton, who played at Virginia Tech University, Jacksonville College and at the University of Texas-Arlington (UTA), to a one-year, partially guaranteed, contract.

The signing came even though the 7-foot, 230-pound 24-year-old center was not drafted in this year’s NBA Draft.

Hamilton averaged 4.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.7 blocks a game this summer while playing just south of 13 minutes per game.

The Pistons will be in the Texas-Oklahoma area in early October when they take play road exhibition games at Oklahoma City on Oct. 3 and then take on the Spurs in San Antonio two nights later.

Detroit finished in ninth place in the NBA’s Eastern Division last season, after going 39-43.

“What a day to be alive. Thanks to the almighty, my family and coaches for having my back and helping me grow into the man I am today. I couldn’t do it without y’all. Thanks to the @detroitpistons for granting my first opportunity to be a Professional Athlete,” Hamilton tweeted.
