PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Olympic star Keshorn Walcott and sprinter Michelle Lee Ahye have been voted Trinidad and Tobago’s top sports persons of 2016. The 23-year-old Walcott was rewarded for his bronze medal in the javelin at the Olympic Games in Brazil. He had won gold at the London 2012 Games as a teenager.
Florida could again host the West Indies if plans for the Caribbean’s cricket team to play Pakistan in late March can be finalized. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) is willing to play two Twenty20 internationals in Pakistan between Mar. 11 and 15, once adequate security could be guaranteed. If that tour goes ahead, the PCB would confirm a WICB request for the two countries to play two T20 games in Florida later in the month.
But quality must improve or risk shut out.  The window of opportunity Major League Soccer’s (MLS) expansion promises Caribbean players could close rapidly if the region’s talent doesn’t improve dramatically. When MLS 2017 kicks off in March, two new teams will join, bringing the total to 22. At least six more could be added in later seasons. Expansion has given rise to hope of increased chances for Caribbean players to join North America’s top professional league.
The United States Soccer Federation has announced June 8 as the new date for its 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Trinidad and Tobago, a day earlier than previously scheduled.
