Haiti's Civil Protection network received a substantial boost with the presentation of SUVs, trucks, boats, canoes, 11,000 solar radios, tents and other disaster-response equipment presented as gifts to the Government of Haiti by the U.S. Department of Defense.

In a ceremony held today at the Directorate of Civil Protection in Haiti (DPC) in Port Au Prince, U.S. Ambassador to Haiti, Kenneth Merten, signed over the equipment to Haiti's Minister of the Interior, Defense and the Collectivities Thierry Mayard-Paul, in support of Haiti's Civil Protection network and ongoing disaster preparedness.

ST. THOMAS, United States Virgin Islands (January 11, 2012) - The family of Trinidadian journalist, Mr. Afzal Khan who suddenly passed away in his hometown over the weekend, received condolences from the Commissioner of Tourism of the United States Virgin Islands Beverly Nicholson-Doty.

Expressing her deepest sympathies to his family, the commissioner remembered Mr. Khan "as a valued team member of the Tourism Development Company of Trinidad and Tobago," serving recently as manager of corporate communications.

The American Red Cross marks the second anniversary of the devastating Haiti earthquake with a vigorous and continued effort to help the people of Haiti rebuild their homes and lives, with hundreds of millions of donated dollars committed to the long-term relief project.

In a two-year update, the American Red Cross highlights its emergency work after the 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti on January 12, 2010, as well as its recovery efforts over the past year. The developments also are summed up in this short video.

The new Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Chairman, His Excellency Desi Bouterse, has called on the region to make 2012 a year of change.

Bouterse, who is also the President of Dutch-speaking Suriname said that “by changing the way we do things, this Community will be a changed one – for the better – by the end of 2012.”
