Fresh water isn’t free, and it certainly isn’t unlimited.  That’s why the Miami-Dade Cooperative Extension Division is hosting a Rain Barrel & Water Conservation Workshop on Saturday, September 11.  The workshop will be held at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden, 2000 Convention Center Drive, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.  Participants will learn how they can use water more efficiently to conserve this important natural resource, all while saving money. There will also be an opportunity to exchange your old showerheads and light bulbs for new ones that are more energy efficient.

Extension staff will demonstrate how to use barrels to capture rainwater so that you can use it to irrigate your garden or lawn. They are made from 55- to 60-gallon refurbished food-grade drums and hold enough rainwater to cover a 240 square-foot garden space.  In addition, staff will explain how the Urban Conservation Unit can help you save water by making your irrigation system more efficient.  They will discuss the use of soil moisture sensors, rain sensors and how to repair leaks.

The workshop and exchange events are free. Reservations are required so that enough supplies are on hand. If you wish to construct your own rain barrel, the cost is $45, and you will need to prepay and reserve a barrel or barrels by Wednesday, September 8.    Accepted forms of payment include personal checks or money orders, made payable to the “Miami-Dade Extension Program Account.”

To sign up for the workshops, contact Lize Luna at 305.248.3311, ext. 242, or download an application form online.
