The State has regulatory oversight for telecommunications companies. Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava, through this resolution, urges the Public Service Commission to protect the reliability of wireless telecommunications services, especially during the aftermath of a hurricane when all Florida residents, businesses, and institutions require reliable service.
“Hurricane Irma exposed many of this community’s vulnerabilities,” said Commissioner Levine Cava. “The loss of cell phone coverage in the aftermath of the storm made our recovery even more challenging and caused great frustration and safety concerns for many. We urge the PSC to take up this critical issue, or the Florida Legislature to give the County the authority to require cellphone towers to have emergency backup power to help improve our safety and resiliency in the aftermath of a storm.”
The resolution is part of a package of bills sponsored by Commissioner Levine Cava in response to the most common issues that residents in South Dade encountered before, during and after Hurricane Irma. The resolution passed unanimously.
