SocialMiami Arts Encounter: Public Art Downtown
Experience an array of world-renowned artworks that brighten the downtown streetscape on a special Arts Encounter for SocialMiami readers and guests. Our insider guide, Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places Trust Chair Sandi-Jo Gordon, reveals how the longstanding program selects, develops and maintains these projects in a sunny seaside climate. Meet at Claes Oldenburg’s iconic “Dropped Bowl” fountain installed outside Government Center, then ride the Metromover to view pieces permanently installed at stations, like the towering “Red M” by Miami duo Roberto Behar and Rosario Marquardt, stopping en route for lunch (paid separately).
This tour includes art inside the Main Library, from Ed Ruscha’s permanent murals celebrating words to temporary exhibitions of Tom Virgin’s handmade books and prints, Emilio Sanchez’s paintings, and Mark Osterman’s “Noir Narratives.” Tickets are $30, with RSVPs requested by Wednesday, April 26. Contact SocialMiami Arts Editor Margery Gordon for details and reservations.
