Aventura Hospital and Medical Center is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Jonathan Cross as new Medical Director of the Primary Stroke Center. Dr. Cross has been an active member of the medical staff of Aventura Hospital and Medical Center since 2000 and recently joined the hospital's Board of Trustees.

Dr. Cross has been instrumental over the past few years in helping to develop and expand Aventura Hospital's Primary Stroke Center, which earned a Certificate of Distinction and recertification by the Joint Commission last November and also became the first program in Dade County to earn the American Stroke Association's Get With the Guidelines  Stroke (GWTG-Stroke) Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award.

Today Legacy launched an online rebuttal aimed at providing accurate information to counter the Understanding Menthol website created by tobacco manufacturer Lorillard as the FDA reviews and considers how to treat menthol-flavored cigarettes. While the tobacco industry claims that menthol-flavored cigarettes are no worse than other cigarettes, Consider Your Source confirms:

  • All cigarettes are deadly, whether they are flavored or not.
  • Menthol cigarettes are disproportionally smoked by African-Americans and members of other racial/ethnic communities, contributing to the widespread occurrence of tobacco-related illness.
  • A starter tobacco product for youth, menthol cigarettes are less harsh to smoke and are particularly attractive to new and young smokers.

The award is a hospital-wide initiative designed to give employees an opportunity to recognize those physicians who demonstrate excellence in clinical care and who display genuine acts of kindness and good will.

"Dr. Albataineh is a sweetheart!" remarked a nurse at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center, "With patients, family members and staff! She treats the patients with kindness, love and understanding. She always has a smile on her face! She always greets you anywhere she sees you. We love Dr. Albataineh!"

childhood obesityFamily reunion season has arrived!  Family reunions give families a chance to reconnect with loved ones from across the country, reflect on fond memories, share news and achievements, and welcome new additions.

Food is a big part of the celebration.  From recipe swaps to barbeque bragging rights, many of the most cherished memories involve eating.  But while grandma's famous fried chicken and auntie's sweet potato pie may be mouth-wateringly delicious, they are also high in fat and calories.  As a result, instead of creating healthy traditions, we may be inadvertently passing down to our children a legacy of obesity.
