Seven Local Women Being Honored During March's National Women's

County Commission issued Proclamation at their March 11 Meeting

The Broward County Commission on the Status of Women will celebrate National Women's History Month in March, by honoring seven Broward County women as "Unsung Sheroes" who exemplify the theme of this year's national observance, "Celebrating Women of Character, Courage and Commitment."

The honorees are featured this month in an exhibit in the lobby of the Governmental Center, 115 S. Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale. The achievements and dedication of these role models honor the extraordinary and often unrecognized determination and tenacity of women who contribute to their respective Broward County communities. The honorees include:

  • Jane Broder, educator, City of Plantation
  • Anne Castro, community activist, City of Dania Beach
  • Dora Jane "Dee" Davis, educator, City of Pompano Beach
  • Donna Evans, community volunteer, Town of Davie
  • Donna Guthrie, civic leader, Melrose Park
  • Estelle Lowenstein, community activist, City of Hollywood
  • Catherine Neal, Social Reformer, City of Pompano Beach

"Our goal is to honor and demonstrate the impact these women have had on our County. They have demonstrated their character, courage and commitment. Their lives and their work inspire girls and women to work toward their full potential. National Women's History Month 2014 provides an excellent opportunity to honor these women and their accomplishments," said Danielle Sylvester, chair, Commission on the Status of Women and director of Annual Giving and Alumni Affairs, Office of Advancement, Broward College Foundation, Inc.

The Board of County Commissioners presented a proclamation recognizing National Women's History Month and honoring these women on Tuesday, March 11, at the 2 p.m. Good and Welfare meeting at the Broward County Governmental Center.

The Commission on Status Women serves in an advisory capacity to the Broward County Commission and through education and advocacy, identifies and helps resolve economic, health and social issues facing women in our community. For more information, visit or follow us on
