It will feature some of the best contemporary dance ensembles of any kind, including the London-based Candoco Dance Company, one of the world’s top inclusive groups; San Francisco Bay area (Oakland) AXIS Dance Company, the leading physically integrated one in the U.S.; Tampa-based REVolutions Dance; and of course KPD.
Forward Motion will include numerous ways for general audiences, professionals and students to engage with the visiting companies, beyond actual performances, and deepen their understanding of physically integrated dance and the issues it raises. The festival will begin with a free for the general public opening event on Wednesday, September 26, at 7:00 pm. It includes a short showcase by Candoco and KPD, a brief discussion with the artistic directors and dancers, and a reception, at The Light Box in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood. RSVP is suggested.
A Forward Motion Conference will take place on Thursday, September 27, at The Light Box, from 3:00 to 8:00 pm. It is geared towards dancers, people with disabilities, and those who work in the educational, health and service fields. Panels and round tables will address such issues as the artistic approaches to working with physically integrated companies, from training to choreography; representation of people with disabilities in the arts and media; and the intersection of disability rights and other movements for inclusion and equity. Registration is $25, and $20 for students with ID, seniors 65 and over, with special discount packages available.
A range of Forward Motion workshops will be open to everyone, all taking place at The Light Box. These include, with AXIS, on Friday, September 28, at 11:00 am and at 3:00 pm; and with Candoco, on Saturday, September 29, workshops at 11:00 am and 3:00 pm. Registration is $10 for everyone, with special discount packages available.
“We are so excited to launch Forward Motion with lead support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts,” says Karen Peterson, Founder and Artistic Director of both her own KPD company, and the Forward Motion event. “We will be showcasing and helping to build this inclusive art form that bridges societal boundaries and obstacles.”
The Forward Motion two major public performances will take place on the Miami-Dade County Auditorium main stage. On Friday, September 28, at 8:00 pm, there will be a full evening of Candoco Dance Company featuring two U.S. premieres; and on Saturday, September 29, 8:00 pm, it is an evening that showcases AXIS Dance Company with two South Florida Premiere, with shorter performances from REVolutions Dance and Karen Peterson and Dancers. Tickets for each night are $25, with special discounts and ticket packages available.

Knight Foundation; the National Endowment for the Arts; the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and Cultural Affairs Council, and the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners; the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture; Citizens Interested in the Arts; Louis Leibowitz Foundation; WLRN; Miami Light Project; Miami-Dade Country Auditorium; Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton; and other donors.
