Commissioner Edmonson joins Marlins and Hands on Miami for Duarte Park Beautification Project

Billy the Marlin gives a thumbs up while helping Commissioner Audrey M. Edmonson plant trees at Duarte Park in Allapattah on February 12, 2010.
Commissioner Audrey M. Edmonson flexed her green thumb along with members of the Florida Marlins and Hands on Miami at Juan Pablo Duarte Park in Allapattah on Friday, February 12, 2010. With players, officials, and Billy the Marlin helping out, Commissioner Edmonson planted several trees at the park to beautify the area.

The event was part of the Florida Marlins’ 2010 Caravan for Earth, a week-long initiative to promote “green” activities throughout South Florida. Starting on February 8, Marlins players and officials partnered with local organizations and community leaders to encourage wildlife conservation, use of public transportation, environmentally-conscious home improvements, recycling, and park restoration.

In addition to the tree planting, the Marlins have already begun to spruce up the park’s baseball diamond.

“My thanks go to the Marlins and Hands on Miami for their hard work in improving Juan Pablo Duarte Park,” said Commissioner Edmonson. “Sometimes it takes cooperation and good will to take on these community challenges. Now, the children of Allapattah will have a ‘greener’ park and a refurbished ball field for the new baseball season.”
