Miss Jamaica Davina Bennett, right, finished second runner-up in the 2017 Miss Universe pageant held Nov. 26 in Las Vegas. The crown was won by Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa, left. Runner-up was Miss Colombia Laura Gonzalez. They emerged top three from a field of 92 contestants.
NEW YORK, NY – November 22, 2017 – Jamaican reggae, dancehall, R&B singer/songwriter Ikaya, one of island’s top female artists will headline this year’s fundraising scholarship gala and awards of the New York based non-profit Children of Jamaica Outreach (COJO) Inc. The charity event will take place at the Hilton New York, JFK Airport on Saturday, December 2, 2017. 
Last week, five devastated members of the Brown family from Kingston, Jamaica waited anxiously at the remote Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. A flight bringing in the remains of their brother, Sgt. Hughton Koopie Brown, 43, a US army soldier who died in Kuwait on Tuesday landed on time, at 1:37 PM, with military precision. The flight was accompanied by a US Army chaplain who shared more details with the family as to how the Jamaican-born sergeant who was supporting the US counterterrorism mission in Afghanistan lost his life.
THOMAS, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS - On Sunday afternoon Governor Kenneth E. Mapp led a delegation of representatives from the United States Congress on a tour of severely damaged areas throughout St. Thomas, including the Tutu High Rise housing projects and Roy L. Schneider Hospital.
Ten deserving nationals of the Jamaican Diaspora across the Southern United States were recipients of the Consulate General of Jamaica, Miami, Diaspora Honours at the Awards Ceremony and Reception held last Saturday (Oct. 28) at the Sunrise Civic Center, Sunrise, Florida. The event was continued celebration of Jamaica’s 55th Anniversary of Independence.
