Caribbean, Latin America Cannabis Fast Facts From The Latest UN Drug Report

June 30, 2017: The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has released its 2017 World Drug Report regarding the production, distribution, and consumption of illegal substances on a global scale. Here are six fast facts from the report on cannabis/marijuana in the Caribbean and Latin America you should know:

  1. In South America, the Caribbean and Central America, the most frequently reported source countries of cannabis herb were Colombia and Paraguay, followed by Jamaica.
  2. The largest areas of eradicated cannabis cultivation over the period 2010-2015 were reported by Mexico.
  3. The largest quantities of cannabis plants seized were reported by Bolivia and Peru, followed by Jamaica.
  4. The fourth largest numbers of cannabis plants eradicated were reported by Paraguay.
  5. In 2015, almost two thirds (64 per cent) of the total quantity of cannabis herb seized worldwide was seized in the Americas, most notably in Mexico.
  6. There are around 610,000 marijuana connoisseurs in Jamaica, a country that is home to just under 3 million   people.
