United States Congressman Eliot Engel wants the Caribbean and U.S. Congress to work together to ensure a law to aid the region is fully implemented and has the resources to allow it to succeed. Engel, one of the authors of the U.S./Caribbean Strategic Engagement Act, during an address to the recent Family Unification Resettlement Initiative (FURI) award ceremony in New York, said there needs to be a concerted effort to ensure that the Act succeeds as “President (Donald) Trump and Secretary (of State Rex) Tillerson have proposed a draconian and short-sighted 33 percent cut to our international affairs budget.

As the Trump administration weighs whether to end TPS for thousands of Haitians and Salvadorans, Black immigrants and fellow TPS beneficiaries will demand that Department of Homeland Security extend TPS for all recipients. The Day of Action will also call on congress to legislate a just solution that leads to citizenship for TPS beneficiaries.
